Bible Band Lesson (May 2, 2013)

TOPIC: Christ is Our Shelter

LESSON SCRIPTURE: Revelation 7:1-3, 9, 13-17

DEVOTIONAL READING: Zechariah 4:1-6; 6:1-8

CENTRAL VERSE: Revelation 7:14

INTRODUCTION: Jesus provides protection against sin and prepares us for this world and the next.  He is our antidote against sin without which no one can enter into the blessings of salvation that He alone provides.  It is imperative that the world hears this message, for there is non other that offers the kind of protection He does.

THE PEOPLE OF GOD ARE SEALED  (Revelation 7:1-3)
Here we find that the people of God are protected by the hand of God.  When everything in the universe is against them, God is on their side and they are safe.  In John's vision, he saw the trouble that is about to come upon the whole world.  The four angels were standing at the four corners of the earth and were holding back the four winds that were to soon unleash the power of evil on the earth.  This will be a time of immense testing for the people of God.

There was hush in the universe.  Soon another angel came from the east.  He shouted instructions to the other four angels, who were given power to hurt all that was on the land and sea.  They were to hold back their fury until the children of God had been sealed and marked to be saved from the destruction that is to come on all the earth.  God's servants were to first receive a seal on their foreheads.  This was God's way of protecting His servants.  Even today, God has different ways to protect those who trust in Him.
THE PEOPLE OF GOD MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE (Revelation 7:9)
John saw a vast crowd of people.  These were people from every nation on earth.  They spoke many different languages and belonged to many tribes on earth, but they had this in common: they were all washed in the blood of the Lamb of God.

GOD'S PEOPLE WILL BE PROTECTED (Revelation 7:13-17)
One of the twenty-four elders ventured to explain to John who these people were.  The explanation is simple, for these people were those who had fulfilled their task on earth, who had experienced great suffering, and yet were victorious.

God will be their Shepherd, and all tears will be wiped away.  they drink the water of life eternally.  The will never know the noontime heat, hunger or thirst again.  All who trust Jesus will always be protected.
ESSENTIAL THOUGHT:
"Jesus will protect them as they stand before the throne serving Him."

QUESTIONS:
1.  What is meant  by the "four corners of the earth" (Revelation 7:1)?
2.  What are some other examples of seals or marks mentioned in the Bible?
3.  How can God wipe away all tears?

TOPIC: Christ Our Redeemer

LESSON SCRIPTURE: Revelation 5:1-5, 11-14

DEVOTIONAL READING: Ezekiel 2:9-10; Revelation 10:8-11
CENTRAL VERSE: Revelation 5:13

INTRODUCTION: Jesus the Redeemer is God's best-known gift to a sinful humanity that came straight from His loving heart.  Our lesson this week shows us that our God is worthy to redeem us.
THE SEARCH FOR THE REDEEMER (Revelation 5:1-3)
In John's  vision, he continued to see the things that God has for the world.  The One sitting on the throne (God the Father) had a scroll in His hand.  It was sealed with seven seals.  A strong angel then called out asking who was truly worthy enough to open the scroll and read it.  But no one was found worthy enough in all the universe to do this.
THE REDEEMER IS HERE (Revelation 5:4-5)
Here we see the utter desperation of John as no one responded to the call of the angel to open the scroll.  He wept with hopelessness.  A sinful world without a Redeemer is definitely in a hopeless situation.  Then all of the sudden, one of the twenty-four elders spoke, for the Redeemer had been found.   He was identified as the Lion of Judah and heir to the throne of David.  The Messiah was here.  This is the same Messiah who is here for us today.

Our lesson this  week offers us the bleak reality of a world without God, but at the same time it shows us that God has not left us without hope, for in Jesus all our hopes come together.  He is the only Redeemer that the world will ever need.

THE REDEEMER IS ACKNOWLEDGED (Revelation 5:11-14)
John's vision was not over.  There is more to this wonderful message of hope.  Millions of angels then surrounded the throne of God, the living beings, and the twenty-four elders.  They gathered together and sang loudly in riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory, and all praise.  They did this  because  He alone is worthy of all this.  They acknowledged Him for who He truly is, the Redeemer of the world.

As John looked, he saw in his vision others joining in this chorus of praise.  This included every creature in Heaven and earth and in all the universe.  Every living being praised the Redeemer.  What a song of praise that must have been!  Jesus is the One who deserves all power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory, and blessings.  The twenty-four elders joined in acknowledging Jesus as they chimed in with their "Amen".  Amen indicated full agreement of what went before.  This meant that these elders also agreed that Jesus is indeed the Redeemer worthy of all praise.
ESSENTIAL THOUGHT:
"Jesus is the Lamb that was slain for us."

QUESTIONS:
1.  Describe the "book" seen by John.  What do the seven seals indicate?
2.  Why was John weeping?
3. Why was Christ alone worthy to open the seven seals?

A Word Study of: Redemption

Greek Translation: apolutrōsis or lutrōsis both words are translated as redemption. Apolutrōsis is defined as, the act of freeing or releasing by paying a ransom price.  Lutrōsis is defined as, the act of buying back by paying a ransom price.

The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Jesus Christ paid the ransom price for our sins with His own blood thus freeing us (redeeming us) from the demands of the law and its curse on sin to become children of God.

COMPLETE IN HIM
 During my Bible study this morning the Holy Spirit really blessed me with revelation of the Word. I was reading Colossians 2 when the Holy Spirit revealed to me that WE (His children) are complete in Christ-(the head of all principality and power) and lacking nothing. WE just have to continue accepting God's grace. The Holy Spirit revealed to me that God has delivered US from the power of darkness & placed US into the Kingdom of the Son of His Love – Jesus Christ. Thank God for the VICTORY!
Just a day later The Holy Spirit revealed to me during bible study and discussion of His Word that The Lord’s prayer (also known as the Disciples Prayer) Matthew 6:9-13, when read directly translated from Greek to English is a prayer of declaration and the Greeks understood it as Paul wrote it saying:
Father God, You are in Heaven, Your name is hallow. Your kingdom has come, Your will is done… and so forth.
Wow that is a powerful shift in mindset; declaring what is true about our Lord and not asking Him to do what He has already done. Then I heard the Lord say quit standing outside the Kingdom walls begging. I have given you everything. I have saved you and adopted you as my child. I have done all that I can on the cross. I can do no more it is a finished perfect work. Therefore believers quit standing outside the kingdom gates begging and take your place in the kingdom as my child. Your walk is a partnership with My Holy Spirit- I have given you everything. You have the power- now walk it out! Praise God, Hallelujah. I am complete!

Bible Band Lesson (April 18, 2013)

TOPIC: God Deserves Your Praise

LESSON SCRIPTURE: Revelation 4:1-11

DEVOTIONAL READING: Isaiah 6:1-8; Revelation 20:11-15; 21:1-8
 
CENTRAL VERSE: Revelation 4:11

INTRODUCTION: The focus of our lesson this week is that our God is worthy of all praise.  We are called to praise Him at all times, for He is.  We need to learn to praise Him while we are on earth, for in Heaven, praise is a big part of our calling.  The Bible portrays our God as wonderful, just, and powerful.  He is truly worthy of your praise.
 
THE INVITATION (Revelation 4:1)
Apostle John continued to record his vision.  What a glorious vision it must have been to be raptured into the presence of God Almighty and to have Him talk with him!  In the Old Testament, people just  did not go into the presence of God lightly.  They had a sense of His awe and majesty.  Here we see that same sense of wonder as John put his experience with the almighty into words for us.
 
THE GLORIOUS THRONE (Revelation 4:2)
John was overwhelmed with wonder and awe as he was transported into the very presence of God in Heaven.  The throne was the center of activity.  The One on the throne was brilliant, like the gemstones jasper and carnelian.  A rainbow circled His throne.

There were also twenty-four thrones around the One on the throne, with twenty-four elders on them.  They were clothed in  white and had golden crowns on their heads.  Thunder and lightning emanated from the throne, and the seven lampstands burned with flames in front of the throne, indicative of the seven spirits of God.  These revealed His nature, like a crystal clear shiny sea of glass spread out in front of the throne.

There were four living beings with  the likeness of a lion, an ox, a human, and an eagle.  Each creature had wings that covered his face.  Before the throne they praised the One on the throne, for He is Holy.  These beings worshiped Him day and night, recounting His holiness. They acknowledged His absolute worthiness with praise.  What John saw was a God who is pure and holy and worthy of all praise.
 
THE WORSHIP (Revelation 4:9-11)
What John saw here is astounding.  When the living beings praise God, the twenty-four elders joined in the chorus of praise.  They acknowledged God's eternality.  Our God does not die.  He always was, is, and ever will be.  The elders took of their crowns and laid them before the throne as they bowed down in absolute worship.

Those who worshiped at the throne recounted God's worthiness and holiness.  They said that God is worthy of all honor and power.  They acknowledged God as the Creator of all things in the universe; so He is greater than all creation.  God created all things for His own pleasure.
 
ESSENTIAL THOUGHT:
We were created by God to worship and praise him.

QUESTIONS:
1.  What is the meaning of the "seven Spritis of God" (verse5)?
2.  What are some the visual images John saw in this vision?
3.  Why do the elders "cast their crowns before the throne" (verse 10)?

Lathrop’s Gladden wins high jump at Big C Relays
 
 

Lathrop senior Tevin Gladden was the only Interior Alaska high school athlete to register a victory during the season-opening Big C Relays track and field meet on Friday and Saturday at The Dome in Anchorage.
 
Gladden, last year’s Class 4A state champion, won the boys high jump Friday for the second straight year in the Big C Relays.

Gladden cleared 6 feet, 2 inches in The Dome on Friday. He outleaped runner-up Jay Ulen of Soldotna by an inch.

Gladden won at last year’s Big C Relays with an attempt of 6-5 and he took the state title last May at Lathrop with a 6-2 effort.

Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is  admirable—  if anything is excellent or praiseworthy —think about such things. Philippians 4:8 NIV

A young believer asked a group of us, “How do you think pure?” Like so many of us she was struggling with her thought life. Some said to this young believer that she had to get her heart right first before she could even begin to think and be pure, but in my heart I knew this wasn’t right. I pulled her aside and said to her, “You want to think pure then think about Jesus.”
Think about when you first realized just how much Christ loves you, flaws and all, before you even opened your heart and  mouth to receive Him. Or when you fell in love with Christ, when He saved you took you in-in your mess, your fears, your doubts and said, “You’re Mine, My child, My beloved.
Think about those unspoken prayers, the forgotten prayers, those not quite formulated (because it hurts so bad I don’t know what to say) prayers that God answered.
Think about when Christ healed you-healed your loved ones mentally, emotionally and physically. See Him on the cross, where He willingly bore your sins, took your shame, your guilt, your fears and gave you His grace, His righteousness, His peace, abundance and Holy Spirit. Think on that cross where He was beaten, broken and wounded –so that you can be whole.
Remember when you got that unexpected, undeserved blessing. When God busted open doors that was once shut to you; when He said yes when everyone else said no. My friend, think on those pure things,  not on what you’ve lost but what you’ve gained.  Think Jesus and then live like the victorious one that you are! Rejoice beloved child of God because your savior Jesus Christ who is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above what we ask and think says, “The best is yet to come!”

Bible Band Lesson (April 11, 2013)

TOPIC: The Starting Place of Love

LESSON SCRIPTURE: I John 4:7-21

DEVOTIONAL READING: Mark 12:28-34
CENTRAL VERSE: I John 4:19
INTRODUCTION: We all know how difficult it is for us to love someone when we do not feel like doing it. People hurt us all the time, and yet it is in the midst of our own hurt and pain that we are called by God to love these very same people. Our lesson this week, therefore, points us to the very source of love, God Himself. Without God, we cannot ever love others, for love does not come naturally to us. We need Him to love through us.
GOD'S LOVE (I John 4:7-8)
John challenged the believers of his day to love one another, for love comes from God alone. When we love others, we become outpourings from the very source of God. Loving others is a sign we are born of God, renewed by the Holy Spirit Who resides within the believer. Love, therefore, is a mark of a relationship between God and man.
SUPREME EXAMPLE OF LOVE (I John 4:9-12)
God showed us that He truly loved us with He sent His very own Son to die for us on the cross for our sins. That was the supreme example of real love. He sent that which was closest to His heart to die for us to show us that we are close to His heart despite our sins. Jesus was the sacrifice for our sins.
PROOF OF LOVE (I John 4:13-16a)
How do we know that we truly have this divine nature to love? God sent His Holy Spirit to live within us to give us the power to love those whom we cannot love in our sinful nature. The Holy Spirit lives within us and constantly remind us that He empowers us to love. John had no doubt about any of this, for he had seen with his own eyes how God had sent His Son into the world to die because He loves us so.
GOD LOVES US FIRST (I John 4:16b-19)
God took that first step, and when we love Him, He makes His dwelling with us in our hearts. As we continue to build our relationship with God, He perfects our inner man little by little. It is a growing process. This prepares us for the Day of Judgment. We can then face it without fear. Christians have the confidence to face God because we have trusted in the very source of all love. When we do this, we are like Christ in this world, for we show His nature.
Perfect love is not tainted with fear. There is no fear of judgment, for Jesus has taken that away. When fear comes in, we know that there is still more work to be done in our lives with love.
WE MUST LOVE BOTH GOD AND MAN (I John 4:20-21)
We can not love God without loving man. We are called to love both Him and our fellow Christians as a reflection of our love for our God. One can not be done without the other.  If we can not love man as Christians, we are not truthful with ourselves, for love is of God.
ESSENTIAL THOUGHT:
Where God is, so is love.
QUESTIONS:
1.  How does love give evidence of the new birth?
2.  What is meant by the phrase "God is love" (I John 4:8)?
3.  How did John view a person who claimed to love God but did not love his brother?

“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”, that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Before the law, before the Ten Commandments, before the seal of circumcision was the promise; an everlasting covenant that God made with Abraham. The word of God says that, “If you belong to Christ then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:29) NIV.  Christ died and took the punishment of the curse (the law) so that believers, Abraham’s seed, may receive by grace the blessings of Abraham. Your Abraham blessings are as follows:
“I will make you into a great nation,
And I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
And you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
And whoever curses you I will curse;
And all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:2-3)
Success, favor, abundance, fruitfulness and unlimited blessings (see also Genesis 13:14-17;15:1; 15: 5-7) are the blessing of Abraham and You are Abraham’s heir and this is God’s promise, given to you not by your works or good deeds by God’s grace and unmerited favor. The only thing that is required of you…is belief.  “Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.” (Genesis 15:6) It’s that simple believers, heirs of Abraham … just believe.
